Launching a home business gives you the advantage of being your own boss, without the extra costs of an outside office. Though it may seem that working from home provides tremendous advantages, the situation is not without its challenges. Many at home workers face the same mistakes, but they can easily be avoided if they know what to look out for.
Mistake #1: Allowing constant interruptions.
Without a boss hounding you to turn things in, you may find that your productivity level starts to slip. Soon, other things seep in and become more important.
You take a phone call here; you get up to make your family a snack there. The everyday interruptions can hurt your focus and bring down your business. To avoid this mistake, set aside specific quiet times during your work hours where you do not allow any interruptions. Put your phone on silent, close your email in your browser and let someone else take care of your kids. You don’t have to do it in huge chunks of time, but a little uninterrupted work here and there and you will get a lot of work done.
Mistake #2: Depending on your loved ones.
Without work colleagues around, we naturally gravitate to our friends and family for a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on. The problem with this is that while they mean well, family members and close friends don’t always understand the ropes when it comes to business. Go around this problem by networking online to find others in your industry that you can connect with. Look for people on Twitter and Facebook, and build a group of like-minded business owners that you can confide in.
Mistake #3: Not having a designated work area.
Having a reserved office space can help you get into work mode. Even if your home is small, you can set aside a corner for your desk and computer specifically for your work. Eliminate all distractions in the area. If you have to work in a common area, keep your desk designated for work only, and create some sort of divide between work and home.
Mistake #4: Letting employees overrun your home.
If your business employs other workers, chances are they will be in your home from time to time. Will you be allowing them to eat in your house? How about taking breaks there? The best thing to avoid any conflict is to set rules from the get go. If you are going to be in your home, establish whether or not you are letting them eat or relax there.
Mistake #5: Not being organized.
When you run your home and business in the same place, you may find that you are extremely busy. As your work and life get the better of you, it’s easy to let organization start to slip. When you don’t have to share your space with anyone, or answer to a boss, it’s easy to succumb to disorganization. Keep papers filed neatly and store business inventory in one place.
Mistake #6: Not having a daily plan.
Without a set schedule, your day can easily get away from you. Setting a schedule for how your day will go will help you set short term and long term goals for your business. Be as detailed as possible, starting from when you wake up to when you go to bed. Schedule your time, hour by hour, and plan out what you are going to do each day.
Mistake #7: Working 24-7.
It’s understandable that you want to ensure that your business is successful. But working around the clock is a surefire way to burn yourself out. When you work from home, it can be difficult to disconnect from work mode, especially since your office is right there. Having set office or work hours can help establish your schedule and keep you sane.
Running a business from home can give you financial freedom without the extra expense of renting an office. However, working from home has its disadvantages and can bring with it some costly mistakes.
